garner state park

Texas is one of those states with an enormously diverse landscape and I think we live in the heart of it: the hill country. After viewing the photos below, you might agree. When you can go from the bustle of city living to the serenity of peaceful nature in just a few minutes, it's a beautiful thing.

We went a little further this weekend and made our way to Garner State Park; I believe it's the largest state park in Texas and well worth the hour and a half drive from our home. Craving a day in nature, we packed up our things (water, sunscreen, snacks, lunch, towels, hiking shoes, camera, and swimsuits) and planned to spend the whole day outside.

After traveling through some very cute, small towns, 'racing' a train, and winding in and around the mountain-like hills of the country, we arrived at Garner. The day was expected to reach 101 degrees. It did. And yes, it's just the beginning of May.

We decided a hike would be best first. Swimming later. So we first took a path around the edge of the water to the furthest point of the property before turning into private land. It was beautiful.

Then we turned around and trekked up the hills, that seemed like mountains, for a few miles. Through and around caves, over cacti, and up and down a rocky path, the outcome was worth the sweat and heat.

Afterwards, we jumped in and waded through the cold water of the Frio River; it didn't get it's name by accident. A little lunch, more swimming, and a nap under the shade trees was the perfect finish to a peaceful day.

Sometimes it's nice to just sit back and soak up the splendor of God's beauty. Nature is such an intriguing part of our lives and I feel most take it for granted. Like the sunflowers we passed to and from the park, as the followed the sun the whole day. Amazing. If there was a way to have the beauty of the country: rolling hills, cool running stream, deer, hiking trails, and no neighbors, all while being close to the city, I'd take it in a heartbeat. But there usually is a drive associated with it. Who knows, maybe my passion for city living will dwindle before I know it. It seems my love for the country is growing...

This is my favorite photo I took. It's encompasses the beauty of life in a most simplistic form.
