running the numbers

It's hard to comprehend the enormity of consumer usage facts. For example: 1.14 million brown paper supermarket bags are used in the US every hour. Or just how powerful the fact that 200,000 Americans die from cigarette smoking every six months and that our government spends $12.5 million every hour on the war in Iraq. These images are just that:

Photographic Artist Chris Jordan puts things into perspective. These images are but a few that illustrate consumer waste and other facts that are often heard, but never fully understood. Check out his website. You will not be disappointed. Click on Running The Numbers and prepare to be overwhelmed and moved. In Chris' own words:

"This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. The underlying desire is to emphasize the role of the individual in a society that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible, and overwhelming... The series is a work in progress, and new images will be posted as they are completed, so please stay tuned."

There are many more facts and images that represent what surrounds us all on his site. This is not something to pass up. Check it out.
